Technical Visits
We are pleased to offer and to inform you what happens at visit places. All technical visits (TV) and tours are offered on a first come first served basis due to the limit of capacity. Several programs are prepared for IRPA15 participants during, pre and post conference as follows

1. National Radiation Emergency Medical Center (Seoul)

The National Radiation Emergency Medical Center (NREMC) of KIRAMS (Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Science; https://www.kirams.re.kr/eng/) has operated the nationwide REM network by designating 23 radiation emergency medical institutions. For the best medical response to radiation emergency, NREMC has built infrastructure and trained skilled manpower against radiological disaster such as; development of the latest treatment protocol, establishment of the treatment network for acute radiation syndrome, organization of the specialized medical treatment council, assessment of health effects of low dose radiation, and providing training programs for individuals involved in radiological emergency.

2. Radiation Health Institute of KHNP (Seongnam city, Gyeonggi-do)

RHI of KHNP started first as the Radiation Health Research Center of Hanil Hospital, KHNP in 1996. It’s work consists of topics such as radiation health, low dose radiation and radiation epidemiology related research, radiation emergency medical preparedness as well as health investigation of nuclear power plant workers in Korea.

3. LG Sciencepark (Seoul)

LG Science park is a hub for R&D talented individuals in electronics, chemicals, biotechnology, software, and telecommunications to create technology for Korea and LG’s continuing growth. 1. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute - HANARO, KURT (Daejeon) + Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (Radiation Standard) (Daejeon)

Two national research institutes of Korea, KAERI and KRISS, located in Daejeon, which is the first science city and also Is the symbolic center for development in technology of modern Korea.

KAERI is developing innovative nuclear technology that protects the safety and the environment of people; nuclear safety, research and industrialization, new technologies for mixed-use, performance of basic science research capabilities. Two facilities and related research topics among various research centers mainly opened for visitors, a research reactor, HANARO and an underground research cave for radioactive waste disposal, KURT.
KRISS has provided the foundation for the advancement of science and technology through the establishment of national measurement standards, R&D of measurement technologies, and dissemination of national measurement standards. National radiation standards are also provided at KRISS and visiting the center for ionising radiation is covered.
Moving from Seoul by a high-speed train starting at Seoul station or a rental bus leaving at the convention center, COEX, is possible. It is about 10 min. distance by a bus between KAERI and KRISS.

1. Seoul National University Hospital + Gyeongbokgung Palace (Seoul)

SNU Cancer Hospital, opened on March 2011, is dedicated to providing the best medical service to cancer patients and to helping free them from the fear of cancer diseases. * Gyeongbokgung Palace
Gyeongbokgung Palace, or the Palace of Felicitous Blessing, was the main Palace of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It opened in 1395, the fourth year of the reign of Taejo, the founding monarch of Joseon. It was located at the heart of newly appointed capital of Seoul and represented the sovereignty of the Joseon Dynasty. It can be a representative tourism spot for foreigners to understand the tradition and history of Korea.

Full Day Tours

1. Proton Therapy Center of National Cancer Center + DMZ Tour (Goyang city, Gyeonggi-do)

* Proton Therapy Center of National Cancer Center
NCC (National Cancer Center; https://www.ncc.re.kr/indexEn.ncc) has been at the forefront of Korea’s ‘War on Cancer’ since its inception in 2000. To reduce the burden of cancer, NCC has made concerted efforts to develop better strategies for cancer prevention and early detection and more effective measures at the national and international levels. Ever since 2007, National Cancer Center, one of Korea’s premier cancer hospitals, has been providing proton therapy as a treatment for cancer. Facilities such as proton accelerator, gantry rooms and several technologies for Proton Beam Therapy will be shown shortly in the morning and an additional tour to visit DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) in the afternoon is planned. As This special DMZ tour is prepared as this is a full-day tour schedule as a post-conference tour and the NCC site is not far from DMZ for visitor access.
* DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)
The DMZ stretches some 248km across the Korean Peninsula from the mouth of the Imjin River in the west to the town of Goseong in the east. The demilitarized zone itself, where human activity has been greatly limited for the last half-century, has become one of Asia’s greatest nature preserves.

3 Days Tour

A three-days pre-conference tour is possible at the South-Eastern part of the Korean peninsula. Gyeongju, the capital city of the Shilla dynasty has more than a thousand-year history and the whole city is a museum.

Day: May 7 (Thu) to May 9 (Sat) 3 days TV and Tour

Day 1. Go to Gyeongju city

Delegates and accompanying persons are going to depart Seoul by a high speed train (KTX) and a bus and transfer direct to a hotel in Gyeongju city (Bomun Resort Place). Tour participants will stay the first night and take a dinner at Gyeongju.

Day 2. Technical Tour, Environment-Friendly Complex of Korea Radioactive, Waste Agency and Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant

KORAD as a government agency has a role in safe management of all kinds of radioactive wastes; it was created by the “Radioactive wastes management act” to be dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety and to value the environment by providing safer and more efficient radioactive waste management. Visitors can access the Environment-friendly complex for low level radioactive waste (LLW) disposal site (https://www.korad.or.kr/korad-eng/html.do?menu_idx=40) including the underground facility.

Wolsung Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is the second NPP constructed in Korea following the Kori NPP. It is the only NPP that has both heavy water reactors (Wolsung #1, 2, 3, and 4) and the light water reactors (Shinwolsung #1 and 2). Visit the Public Information Hall of Wolsong Nuclear Site to find out about energy and nuclear energy, which are always with us, but are not known very well. Various exhibits, video data and games will help you understand the principle of nuclear electric energy, the world of mysterious radiation, the relation between nuclear energy and natural environment, etc. Public Information Hall of Wolsong Nuclear Power Site will be an excellent place for a field trip. Day 3. Bulguksa + Seokguram

Tour of the oldest historical city of Shilla dynasty, which is the oldest and longest dynasty of ancient Korea will follow the KORAD and Wolsong NPP tour until the next day’s afternoon where visits to the history museum, Bulguksa temple, Seokguram and the Toham mountain is planned.
(Starts following KORAD and Wolsong NPP to the early afternoon of next day, looking around museum, Bulguk-sa, Seokgulam, and Toham mountain, etc).
